Tales from the search for tales.
I’m Samanth Subramanian, a magazine journalist whose work has appeared in the Guardian, the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, WIRED, Harper's and Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Happily, I have no beat; I’ve written about how the world might sanction Donald Trump’s America, how Macedonian teenagers set up little fake-news factories, how Singapore is creating more land for itself, and how the hand-dryer industry is tussling with Big Paper Towel for the right to dry your hands. (Really.) An archive of past work is here.
In parallel, when there’s time, I write books. My latest, “A Dominant Character: The Radical Science and Restless Politics of J. B. S. Haldane,” was published in India in Dec. 2019 and will be out in the UK and the US in July-August 2020.
My newsletter, multi-storied, has outtakes from old and new stories, glimpses into work-in-agonising-progress, short original writing, and idle chat about journalism. I love the idle chat, in particular.
